History

History

Estherwood Elementary has undergone numerous changes since its construction in 1892.  The timeline below provides a brief overview of the events that changed a one room school to a school that presently houses over 200 students.  

    • first building constructed
    • one newly enlarged school was constructed
    • staff included a principal and two teachers
    • bond issue passed to provide funds for the construction of a new brick building
    • completion of brick building
    • total cost of the building was $10,000.
    • faculty expanded to  6 teachers and a student body of 100 students
    • wood frame built to house 1st grade and Home Economics -later became the building for parish carpenters
    • became a high school and announced its first graduating class
    • Estherwood and Midland schools consolidate
    • Estherwood School becomes a state approved high school
    • Construction of 4 new classrooms used to house 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th
    • Home Economics department built
    • Grant obtained for construction of a gymnasium and auditorium for a cost of 130, 649        
    • Parent Teacher Club began
    • Consolidation of schools  - 8th - 12th grades moved to Midland High School
    • Estherwood Elementary School credited for establishing the first Kindergarten in the parish
    • First Elementary School in parish to be accredited by the Southern Association of  Colleges and Schools
    • Major renovation of brick building at a cost of $350,000
    • other sections partially renovated, which raised the net worth of the facility at $730,940.67
    • The Head start Program became part of the EES campus.
    • A computer lab, concession stand, and new bathrooms were added at a cost of $120,000.
    • Pre-kindergarten and STAR class become part of EES
    • A new portable building is brought in to house two Kindergarten classes.
    • New construction of building on the west side of campus to house 4 new classrooms and 2 bathrooms.
    • New cafeteria added on the northwest side of the campus.
    • New fence installed around campus.
